Look for fish oil capsules and bottled oil that is "molecularly distilled," meaning that the heavy metals that concentrate in fish fat (remember, you're what the thing you ate ate) have been removed. And stop wrinkling your nose! Modern fish oil, particularly Carlson's Norwegian Fish Oil, has absolutely no "fishy" taste. I even fooled my wife when I first started sneaking it into our salads; she actually complimented me on how tasty the dressing was. In my opinion, the Trader Joe brand represents excellent value. Can't find a molecularly distilled product? |

We already know that fish oil is quite effective for treating manic depression or bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. fish oil capsules have two different types of omega-3s in them called EPA and DHA. It usually comes in 1000 milligram capsules and you need to take quite a lot of it. I recommend a total of about 10 grams per day of EPA and DHA divided into two doses. That usually works out to about 20 capsules per day. You should also increase the amount of fish and greens in your diet. |

This enzyme is often added to fish oil capsules to help in the digestion of the oil.
A good enzyme supplement will not just substitute for the body in the digestive process. Supplementing with digestive enzymes will decrease the need for all of the pancreatic enzyme secretions to be active in the digestive tract. This will allow some of the pancreatic enzymes to be absorbed into the blood, where they can work on that portion of food that enters the blood and lymphatic system undigested, helping to break it down. Pancreatic enzymes also enhance the immune system. |
| In addition to seeking healthy sources of essential fatty acids, I encourage supplementation with fish oil capsules. The purification techniques used ensure undetectable levels of mercury, PCBs, and other contaminants that can come with consuming tainted fish.
Look for a supplement that is either a balance of omega-3, -6, and -9 or for more therapeutic value, a concentrated, enteric-coated omega-3 supplement. If you are prone to burping oils, a good lipase-containing supplement (described in the upcoming pages under Enzymes) will aid in digestion.

There have been three large secondary prevention intervention studies where patients with CHD were given dietary advice to consume at least two servings of fatty fish a week (20CMKX) grams of fish) or given supplemental fish oil capsules (850 mg EPA and DHA and 1800mg EPA). These interventions resulted in a 21-29% reduction in all-cause mortality [108], 45% reduction in sudden death from MI [108, 109], and 19% reduction in all coronary events [110]. |
| The most consistent finding in the initial review [36] was that n-3 supplementation reduced corticosteroid requirement, and in the more recent review [37], prolonged remission was associated with use of with enteric-coated fish oil capsules. The authors concluded that larger controlled studies are needed with histologic and clinical evidence of effect. |
| More recent analyses demonstrate some effectiveness, especially with the use of enteric coated fish oil capsules in maintenance of remission and reducing corticosteroid requirements [36, 37].
In general, n-3 lipid content of the Western diet is lacking for general health maintenance and may be especially low in some patients with IBD. n-3 lipid supplements appear to be reasonably safe in the small doses required to alter membrane eicosanoids and may have value in either sparing other therapies or independently tempering the inflammatory process and its consequences [33-36, 117-1 19]. |

Dealing with Alcohol and Drug Abuse
One contradiction of our society is that we love alcohol but usually disdain people who abuse it. Less contradictory is the view of drug abuse: nearly everyone in mainstream society sees illegal (street) drugs, such as cocaine and methamphetamine, as being nothing less than addictive and dangerous. |

EFAs are also available in supplement form - such as fish oil capsules or evening primrose oil - and are effective at treating a wide range of disorders, from depression and cancer to arthritis and heart disease. Good sources of omega-3 oils include chia seeds, flax seeds and, for non-vegetarians, wild-harvested fish oils. A reputable supplier of fish oils is Nordic Naturals (www.NordicNaturals.com)

And if you eat more flaxseed or take fish oil capsules, guess what? Alli will interfere with those, too, causing you to miss out on at least some of their benefits.
What an incredibly genius idea for a drug! Transform adults into diaper-wearing little children, then leave them in a state of nutritional deficiency. Only a drug company could have thought of this one! (And only a desperate, gullible public could actually believe the hype on a drug like this...)
If you're considering taking Alli, you can save yourself the money by following these three simple steps: 1) Sit on the toilet. |

The amount of EPA, however, may be more significant than the ratio of EPA to DHA, so you may benefit equally from Carlson Laboratories' fish oil capsules or lemon-flavored liquid fish oil.
For bipolar disorder, consider taking 5 to 15 grams of EPA daily— that's the dose of EPA, not the total amount of oils in the capsules. Start with the lower dose and increase it gradually over several weeks. Although the dosage may seem high (and may involve swallowing a lot of capsules or teaspoons of fish oil), traditional diets in Arctic regions provide 15 to 19 grams of fish oils daily. |

| Natural approach: fish oil capsules (500 mg, twice daily) and selenium (100 to 200 micrograms [meg] daily) have been shown to reduce symptoms of psoriasis. Natural mixed carot-enoids (5,000 to 10,000 international units [IU] daily) which convert to vitamin A in the body, if it is needed, and vitamin D (400 to 800 IU daily) promote healthy skin and protect against infection. Allow 30 days for this program to take effect.
Also helpful: Aloe vera gel, applied twice daily, soothes affected skin and relieves itching. |

Take omega-3 fish oil capsules or liquid to achieve approximately 2,000 mg of EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) daily.
Selenium. Some evidence suggests that selenium may prevent meth-related brain damage. Take 200 to 400 meg daily.
Alcohol and drug addictions are difficult to treat. A multipronged approach, as described here, may enhance and reinforce recovery. Needless to say, a certain amount of personal vigilance is required to avoid psychological and social situations that might tempt the use of alcohol or drugs. |

| Though fish oil capsules are an easy way to get your omega-3, an even better way is from natural sources. Look for omega-3 in cold-water fish like salmon, tuna, mackerel, and sardines. It's also found in flaxseed and wheat germ.
Ginger. If you want milder and less frequent migraines, this is the rhizome for you. A Danish woman suffering from frequent migraines drank a mixture of powdered ginger and plain water during an attack and noticed her headache was less severe. She started eating raw ginger regularly and had fewer migraines. |
| An Australian study found another winning combination — fish oil capsules and atorvastatin (Lipitor). These things work in different ways to achieve a better balance of fats in your blood. While statins block the formation of cholesterol, fish oil stops the creation of triglycerides. Obese people with insulin resistance, which puts them at risk of developing diabetes, benefited from this dual treatment.
Follow new guidelines. The National Cholesterol Education Program recently announced new guidelines designed to help lower cholesterol levels. |

Unlike fish oil capsules, the cod liver oil in this trial contained not only eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), but 5,000 IU of vitamin D (page 607). Therefore, it is not known whether the vitamin D or fatty acids were responsible for the cod liver oil's effects. (One preliminary study found that giving vitamin D-like drugs to animals with MS was helpful.)26 It is also possible that the magnesium and/or calcium given to these people reduced MS attacks. |

Do not take fish oil capsules or supplements containing large amounts of para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), and avoid salt and white flour products. Consumption of these products results in an elevation of blood sugar.
Q Do not take supplements containing the amino acid cysteine. It has the ability to break down the bonds of the hormone insulin and interferes with absorption of insulin by the cells.
Q Do not take extremely large doses of vitamins Bi (thiamine) and C. Excessive amounts may inactivate insulin. These vitamins may, however, be taken in normal amounts. |

She ate moderate servings of whole-grain products and I had her take a water-soluble fiber supplement before each meal, fish oil capsules, and a high-potency multivitamin.
Within a few days of beginning this program, Susan began to notice that her insulin requirements were less. As well, her appetite decreased significantly on the higher-protein, higher-fiber, and low-glycemic-index/glycemic-load diet. She started feeling so good from her walks that she ended up walking 1 hour most days and she also began going to a gym twice per week to lift weights (instead of walking on those days). |

Other "experts" recommend taking fish oil capsules to lower cholesterol, but fish oil is 100 percent fat, and the evidence is lacking that the ingestion of fish oil reduces serum fats.
Q Pure virgin olive oil appears to help reduce serum cholesterol. A monounsaturated-fatty-acid rich diet that includes olive oil may be the reason for the low serum cholesterol levels found in people living in Italy and Greece.
Q Studies have shown that diets consisting of grains, fruits, and vegetables result in lower blood cholesterol levels. |

Dosage: For prevention of inflammatory disorders, take 1 gram of omega-3 fish oil capsules daily. If you have a form of arthritis, take at least 3 grams daily of omega-3 fish oils. If you never eat fish, you may want to take at least 5 grams of fish oils daily. In addition, take 400 IU of natural vitamin E daily, which will protect the fish oils from free-radical damage.
Side effects: Fish oil supplements have been shown to lower blood levels of triglyceride, a fat associated with an increased risk of coronary artery disease, but sometimes to raise cholesterol levels slightly. |
| Hutt also asked her to take several anti-inflammatory supplements, including fish oil capsules (1,000 mg twice daily), as well as ginger, turmeric, and bromelain.
Anita's response was dramatic. After three weeks she had lost ten pounds and her glucose had normalized, enabling her to stop taking the glucose-lowering medications. Her pain, swelling, and stiffness decreased considerably, and her energy levels began increasing. At a six-week follow-up visit Anita had lost a total of eighteen pounds, and her blood pressure was normal, so she was able to stop taking the hypertensive medications. |

3. RNA, four to six 500-mg capsules a day.
4. Life Extension Mix, 3 tablets 3 times a day (basic multinutrient formula).

For omega-3, this means either flaxseed oil capsules or the more concentrated fish oil capsules providing EPA and DHA. For omega-6, this means supplementing a source of GLA, such as evening primrose oil or borage oil. Even better is a combination of all three—EPA, DHA, and GLA.
These are the basic building blocks of a good supplement program. I take these every day. Then, there are optional extras—from nutrients that support your brain and your mood and give you an energy boost when you need it, to natural relaxants or hormone balancers. |

If you do take fish oil capsules, also take on a daily basis 200 to 400 IU of vitamin E. Look for brands of fish oil that list a small amount of d-alpha tocopherol (vitamin E) on the label. It keeps the fish oil fresh. Store the capsules in the refrigerator after opening. I use Trader Joe's brand, Trader Darwin's Omega-3 Fatty Acid Dietary Supplement. Any "fishy burps" you experience will diminish after three or four days of supplementation.

| Most fish oil capsules contain between 300 and 500 mg of omega-3 fish oil per 1 g capsule. Patients using fish oil at the therapeutic levels discussed in this chapter may require between 15 and 30 capsules to derive the described benefits. At 9 calories/g of oil, this can represent a significant increase in caloric intake.
EPA/DHA-rich fish oil capsules should be kept in capsules (such as soft gelatin) capable of providing an oxygen barrier, otherwise toxic lipid peroxides (e.g. malondialdehyde) may form. |

In a nutshell, get your GLA oil by avoiding things that deplete it and by eating oatmeal, and get your EPA oils by eating fish regularly. If you want to take GLA (borage oil) and EPA (fish oil) supplements for a few months to get your prostaglandin pathways in good working order, you should be taking 50 to 100 times more EPA than GLA. You only need 1 to 2 mg of GLA and 50 to 100 mg of EPA. |
