One was a fish oil vitamin that had like 10 milligrams of fish oil extract and the rest of it was soybean oil. That is amazing.
Dr. Liers: Often you find it's genetically modified soybean oil, as well.
Mike: Right. Let us wrap up the pet supplement section here. Do you have any other comments on that?
Dr. Liers: Our red line is core supplements. Our blue line is for specific conditions. We have in the blue line Diabetes Defense, Joint Health Formula, and Allergy Defense, which are for major conditions. Then for gastrointestinal discomfort, we offer 'GI Defense. It is a very unique formula. |

At present, it is unclear if fish oil sources of EFAs have any therapeutic value for the treatment of anxiety. Daily doses should provide a minimum of 1 g of EPA daily to have a successful outcome,16 but better results might be more achievable with higher daily doses of a supplement containing both EPA and DHA.
The most common side effects from fish oil supplements are gastrointestinal, consisting of mild dyspepsia, belching, increased flatulence, diarrhea, or a fishy aftertaste. Side effects can be minimized if taken with food or by taking an enteric-coated fish oil preparation. |

They also observed a 14% increase in fasting blood glucose following the fish oil intervention, suggesting a possible adverse effect on glycemic control, at least in this patient population.147
Rivellese et al also conducted a randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of fish oil as an intervention for individuals with type 2 diabetes. The treatment group received 2.7 g/day eicosapentaenoic plus docosahexaenoic acid for two months, followed by 1.7 g/day for four additional months. During the trial, diet and hypoglycemic drugs remained unchanged. |

That is why many individuals in the industrialized world need to take flaxseed oil and fish oil in supplementation in an attempt to bring these back into balance.
Here is another unknown fact: essential fats also have the ability to actually decrease our total cholesterol levels and our LDL (bad) cholesterol levels. This means that not all fats are created equal. I not only encourage my patients to supplement the omega-3 fatty acids but also to decrease their intake of saturated fat. |

While the investigators found no deterioration of blood glucose control, this dose of fish oils was unable to modify insulin resistance in this patient population.148

Dealing with Alcohol and Drug Abuse
One contradiction of our society is that we love alcohol but usually disdain people who abuse it. Less contradictory is the view of drug abuse: nearly everyone in mainstream society sees illegal (street) drugs, such as cocaine and methamphetamine, as being nothing less than addictive and dangerous. |
| Several studies have found that fish oil supplements may help in depression. These oils are rich in eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), members of a family of healthy and essential fats. The contemporary diet is very low in these fats; this allows less healthy fats to take their place and affect brain chemistry. Try 1 to 6 grams daily.
DHEA. The hormone dehydroepiandrosterone is the precursor to estrogen and testosterone. In the 1990s, it became a popular supplement because it often boosted energy levels, increased muscle, and improved libido and sexual performance. |
| High intake of the omega-6s increases the risk of depression, whereas many studies have found that omega-3 fish oil supplements are helpful in treating depression. They also function as a mild blood thinner and a regulator of heart rhythm.
Other studies have found that the omega-3 s can help to reduce impulsive behavior, hostility, and physical aggressiveness. In a double-blind study of forty middle-aged men and women, taking 1.5 grams of DHA daily led to significant reductions in aggressive behavior toward other people in just two months. |
| Note: Very high doses of fish oil will have a blood-thinning effect, which your doctor should monitor if you are taking blood-thinning medications.
High-potency multivitamins. A Canadian study found that a proprietary multivitamin-multimineral supplement may reduce symptoms of bipolar disorder. The formulation, called E M Power + (EMP, or "empower plus"), originated as a veterinary product to calm agitated farm animals; however, clinical testing of the product by doctors at the University of Calgary, Canada, found it helpful in young and middle-aged bipolar patients. |

Mike: Do you buy canned sardines?
Dr. Liers: Yes. Canned sardines will cost you around a dollar for 15 ounces. You can get them at your Asian or ethnic food market, or even Safeway has them for about $1.50. We regularly serve our dogs sardines. We developed a recipe called Dog Heaven. We mix a little bit of Innova EVO dog food with the sardines. Then we add Rejuvenate! and maybe some chlorella or Living Fuel. |

Cold-pressed sunflower, safflower, linseed and soya oils, salmon, herring and mackerel or fish oil supplements and evening primrose oil are good dietary sources of EFAs. We recommend cold-pressed oils only, as oils not labelled as refined in this way will have been extracted from their source using chemicals and are not as healthy for you. Add a selection of haricot, kidney or soya beans to your diet, and nuts such as walnuts, almonds and brazil nuts (peanuts and cashews are not as useful), for a varied combination of EFAs in your diet. |

A third advantage of the flaxseed oil over fish oil is that fish and fish oil are high in cholesterol. Three and one-half ounces of cod liver oil contain 570 milligrams of cholesterol, which equals the amount found in two egg yolks. The fourth advantage of flaxseed oil over fish oil is the fact that fish are often high in toxic residues because they sometimes live in polluted waters. The fifth reason flaxseed is more propitious is that high levels of fish oil are rich in vitamin A and D, which can be toxic in high doses. |

A diet rich in omega-3 fats, found in salmon, fish oil, and flaxseed oil, also seems to underlie prevention of acne," Dr. Cordain observes.
Less Junk Food Could Mean Fewer Wrinkles
Apparently, cutting back on bad carbs could do much more than rid you of acne. Scientists are also finding that low-sugar, nutrient-rich diets actually reduce wrinkling and enable your skin to stay supple longer. This remarkable food/wrinkle link was documented by an Australian study of 453 adults over age 70 who were originally from Greece, Sweden, or Australia. |
