I knew that the amount we had prescribed wasn't toxic, because thirty years ago, public health policy in the Netherlands had mandated that all newborns receive 2,000 IU of vitamin D (in cod liver oil) to prevent rickets, and there were no observations of any toxicity.
How did Jennifer do? Her first-visit scores and notes looked like this:
?0.375-65-0-15-6 (function, pain, fatigue, health perception, sleep)
?90 minutes of stiffness in the morning
At follow-up four months later, though, the changes looked like this:
?0.125-0-15-5-6 scores
?No stiffness
?Function improved by 67 percent

In the good old days, especially during the winter, mothers made their kids swallow a spoonful of cod liver oil. It was never clear exactly what cod liver oil was good for, but mothers seemed to know that fish oil had beneficial properties. It was just "good for you," no matter how bad it tasted.
Well, it turns out that virtually all of those quaint old strategies have now been proven helpful against depression. As you will learn shortly, research has shown that fish oil, exercise, light exposure, and cognitive behavioral therapy are surprisingly effective in dealing with depression. |

Increase your consumption of omega-3 fatty acids, found in cod liver oil and oily fish such as salmon, sardines, and mackerel. Eliminate products that contain trans-fatty acids from your diet, including margarine and deep fried foods. Trans-fatty acids are unsaturated liquid oils that have been chemically transformed into saturated fats so that they will be solids instead of liquids. They cause a fatty, sluggish liver, making it more difficult to metabolize hormones that may be causing PCOS. If you eat red meat, opt for beef that is grass fed and organic, as it contains less saturated fat. |

D is concentrated in liver (e.g., cod liver oil). With fish farming, levels of cholecalciferol in fish raised in aquaculture cannot be assumed to be equivalent to those in wild species. Further, it is now recognized that levels in fish are much more variable than previously recognized [35]; therefore, caution must be taken in using data from Table 2. Other concerns about consumption of fish or fish oils include consumption of too much mercury and vitamin A. |

When you eat fish or take fish or cod liver oil, you're consuming "long-chain" omega-3S. I call all these oils "green" oil. Just as these fish incorporate the green fats they consume into their systems, all animals-and that includes you, my friend-incorporate fats from the things they eat into their own cells and fat stores. The problem arises in that many of the animals we eat today have a radically different diet from what they had in the past. |

Cod liver oil contains high amounts of vitamin D, and you could get too much if you took cod liver oil and went into the sun on a regular basis.
GLA (Gamma Linolenic Acid)
If you're taking omega-3s, which I hope you are, some GLA (at least 80 milligrams) should be taken daily to balance them. GLA may also help with weight loss. GLA is gamma linolenic acid, an extremely important omega-6 fatty acid that the body makes in the presence of an enzyme (delta-6-desaturase) that is inhibited by insulin as well as by trans-fatty acids. Hence, most people don't get enough GLA. |

However, curiously, the rates of intermediate and advanced AMD (characterized by pigmentary abnormalities and geography atrophy) in a sample of older adults from Iceland are markedly higher than rates in three other populations of European ancestry [202, 203], despite having the highest per capita fish intake among Europeans and the fact that 56% report to use cod liver oil, a rich source of LC omega-3 fatty acids.
The protective influence of omega-3 fatty acids could be somewhat dependent on the omega-6 content of the diet. |

In the 18th century cod liver oil was considered a useful arthritis remedy. The trouble with this dietary supplement is that it contains way too much vitamin A, which may be bad for bones. Scientists have reported that high intake of vitamin A from cod liver oil in Sweden and Norway is associated with weaker bones, osteoporosis, and an increased risk of hip fracture.1
To get around this problem, pharmaceutical-grade fish oil might be very helpful. |

That would be great because then Washington would have to figure out what to do with all this salmon or all of this cod liver oil. What if we paid tax with vitamins and minerals and nutrition? What would happen then? Wow. We'd have this whole country with a surplus of healing nutrients and Washington would have no choice but to hand them out to everyone, free of charge.
But wait a minute! How would our government get anything done if it ran on flax instead of dollars? Are you kidding me? You think our government is getting anything done? |

Avoid cod liver oil.
Q Keep the colon clean. Toxins accumulate in the liver and must be excreted via the colon and kidneys. (See colon cleansing in Part Three.)
Q Avoid constipating foods. The liver has to work twice as hard if you are constipated. Be sure your diet contains sufficient amounts of choline, inositol, and lecithin, as well as bulk and fiber.
Q Do not use harsh laxatives to cleanse the system. Lemon enemas are preferred; take these twice weekly. You can also alternate wheatgrass enemas with coffee enemas for two weeks. Both of these detoxify the system. |

Beyond that, we have anti-cancer oils: salmon oil, flax oil and cod liver oil. The list just goes on and on.
I haven't really covered them all, but in addition all those healing foods, there are all the foods you can eliminate from your diet to stop poisoning your body and stop giving yourself cancer. What are those foods? Well, there's sodium nitrate, which is in almost every processed meat product, found in every grocery store in the world, so if you just eliminate processed meats, your cancer risk plummets. |

You can also find GLA in various fish oils, such as cod liver oil, which is another fantastic supplement to be taking on a regular basis. Also, you can get it from a variety of foods, most notably oily fish and many different nuts and seeds. So this, again, is another reason to be consuming raw nuts on a regular basis. In that category, my top choice is raw macadamia nuts.
On the herbal front, there is of course ginkgo, and ginkgo does, in fact, improve brain function. However, it shouldn't be relied on as the only way to boost brain function. |

We're seeing research on herbs like turmeric, now being shown to be a strong anti-cancer herb and something that boosts immune system function. We're learning how cinnamon can control blood sugar levels in diabetics. We're learning about the super healing powers of fruits such as blueberries and raspberries. We're seeing more research on garlic and how garlic can prevent cancer. We're also seeing research on ginseng and how ginseng extracts prevent colds and flus during the flu season. To solve the vitamin D problem, the only thing the people need to do is start drinking cod liver oil by the tablespoon, or exposing their skin to natural sunlight on a regular basis.
Our medical community doesn't test for nutritional deficiencies because nobody makes any money when the tests come back positive. Anybody can sell nutritional supplements, of course, but what I mean is that there's no controlling interest of the drugs that would be used to treat vitamin D deficiencies as in the case of AIDS. |

Get natural sunlight on your skin to produce vitamin D -- the majority of Americans are vitamin D deficient, and without adequate sunshine on your skin, you'll probably never get enough (unless you supplement with cod liver oil or other natural vitamin D sources). Without adequate vitamin D, calcium cannot be absorbed in your small intestine.
Engage in weight-bearing exercise -- by stressing your bones with weight-bearing exercise, your body will respond by creating stronger bones, with higher bone mineral density. |

Adams: cod liver oil is of course a great source of vitamin D, as you mention, but some people are concerned about contamination of these oily fish with heavy metals - is that a concern?
Dr. Holick: Yes, PCBs. And so, what you have to do is if you're going to buy it, buy it from a respectable source. Certainly it's a step in the right direction. But you know there are omega fatty acids in there that have benefits to the heart, and have other health benefits. So it may be that many of those outweigh the possible risk if there are contaminants in there. |

Processed fish oil supplements are also a good idea, but avoid cod liver oil, as its levels of vitamin A and D are too high. Fish oil has been reported to possibly slow tumor growth. Flaxseed oil can be sprinkled onto food.

And we're talking about oily fish like salmon and mackerel, and you would have to eat salmon and mackerel 3-5 times a week in order to get your vitamin D requirement. cod liver oil is another good source, although milk or orange juice fortified with vitamin D has some, but there are only 100 units in an 8 oz glass of vitamin D-fortified milk and orange juice. So you would have to drink 10 glasses of milk or 10 glasses of orange juice a day. You cannot get your vitamin D easily from your diet. |

The most efficient vitamin D supplement is still fish oil, and cod liver oil is the best way to go.
There are four main points you should take from this:
You have to get sunlight into your life in order to be healthy and prevent or even reverse major chronic diseases. Start getting more sun.
Boost your antioxidant count, because antioxidants will protect you from the risk of overexposure to sunlight. Astaxanthin, green foods powder, Berry Green, and other green foods are all excellent sources. Get those supplements now and find ways to work them into your diet starting today. |

However, we do not recommend that you rely on cod liver oil as a source of the essential fatty acids. You would have to overdose on vitamins A and D to obtain the amount of fatty acids you need.
People with diabetes should not take fish oil supplements because of the high fat content, but they should consume fish for its essential fatty acids.
Flaxseeds and Flaxseed Oil

Only one! I saw people buying these vitamins by the basket-load, thinking they were doing themselves some good. You don't see crooks in the business of selling vitamin B12 or cod liver oil or other supplements. Why hoodia?"
The answer is pure economics. Hoodia is where the money is. At $300 a kilogram, hoodia is quite a lucrative commodity. It approaches the price of some high-end industrial metal alloys or bulk diamonds. There's obviously money to be made when something can be sold for $300 a kilo and not be considered blatantly illegal (it's not crack cocaine, for example).
On top of that, there is very high consumer demand. |

Many studies do consistently report that hyperactive children have higher sugar consumption than other children,8 and reducing dietary sugar has been found to halve disciplinary actions in young offenders. |
