What About cod liver oil?
Patients have asked me if a tablespoon of cod liver oil is the solution to low levels of omega-3 fatty acids. Yes and no. While it's true that cod liver oil contains a good dose of omega-3 fatty acids (which probably protected our grandparents from many ailments), it's also true that, in addition to tasting pretty awful, it may be contaminated by mercury and PCBs.
OUR DETERIORATING DIET
The decline of omega-3 fatty acids in our diet is an interesting story. Up until the twentieth century, this group of fatty acids was abundant in our foods. |

Carlson cod liver oil. Of the many fish and cod-liver oil products on the market, this is one of the best. It provides the omega-3 fats and vitamin D. It's a liquid with a light lemon taste. More information is available at www.carlsonlabs.com.
• Chromate. Many companies sell Chromate, the patented brand of chromium polynicotinate (niacin-bound chromium). Research shows that it helps to burn fat while preserving muscle. More information is available at www.interhealthusa.com.
• Pycnogenol. You can buy this antioxidant complex from a great number of companies. |
| Never cook with omega-3 fish oils or cod liver oil.
Practical Guideline #6. Season Your Foods with Herbs and Spices
Culinary herbs—garlic, basil, oregano, rosemary, parsley, dill, saffron, and others—are among the most nutrient dense of all food ingredients. They are rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, and many herbs have been shown to improve blood sugar. Because culinary herbs are used in relatively small amounts, these health-promoting nutrients will provide only modest benefits, but they will contribute to the broader nutritional advantages of eating healthy foods. |
| The company also sells exceptional fish oil supplements, including a lemon-flavored cod liver oil, the widest selection of natural vitamin E products, and a broad range of other vitamin and mineral supplements. For more information, call (800) 323-4141 or go to www.carlsonlabs.com.
Insulow
This company sells Insulow, a unique product that combines the more biologically active "R" form of alpha-lipoic acid (an antioxidant) with biotin (a B vitamin). |

Omega-3 fats are found in cod liver oil, and in fatty fish such as salmon, sardines, and mackerel. Eliminate trans-fatty acids from your diet. A trans-fat is unsaturated liquid oil that has been chemically transformed into a saturated fat so that it will be a solid instead of a liquid. Margarine, partially hydrogenated oils, and deep fried foods are examples of products containing trans-fats. Trans-fatty acids cause a fatty, sluggish liver making it more difficult to metabolize hormones that may be causing hirsutism. When eating red meat, choose beef that is grass-fed and organic. |

A more recent study of pregnant women in Iceland showed that consuming liquid cod liver oil in the first 15 weeks of pregnancy resulted in babies with higher birth weight.101 Higher infant birth weight is related to a lower prevalence of cardiac disease, high hypertension, and glucose intolerance in the future.102'103 Additional good news was that the women did not gain more weight, despite their consumption of increased calories and fat from the oil.
Hormone-like substances called prostaglandins are also involved in the development and clinical expression of preeclampsia. |

And the Population Control Award goes to...
Health authorities in the U.S. announced this week that 100,000 lives could be saved each year if people used more sunscreen and got more frequent mammograms and prostate cancer screenings. This little stunt wins the Population Control Award of 2007 because the more people actually follow this truly bad advice, the smaller the population will be in 2008.

What is cod liver oil but the oil that's squeezed out of the liver organ of a codfish? In the same way, cow brain oil, if there were such a product, would be the oil squeezed out of the brain organ of the cow. They are essentially the same concept, and they both produce very healthy oils from a nutritional point of view. Everybody knows, for example, that DHA is an important oil for the brain health of infants and children. Those who eat more DHA have been clinically proven to be smarter in adulthood. And guess what's found in cow brains? DHA. |

Don't assume that this tastes unpleasant just because it's from fish. cod liver oil is actually close to tasteless. It's sort of like drinking olive oil or corn oil. Additionally, you can buy mint- or orange-flavored cod liver oil from health food stores and it won't taste objectionable at all. You can even mix it into your blended morning drink if you want. Either way, get vitamin D into your diet.
Don't believe for a second that vitamin-D-fortified milk is going to give you enough vitamin D. Most of the vitamin D in milk has been destroyed by excess exposure to light. |

Cod liver oil is probably the best source of vitamin D, which is why I consider cod liver oil to be a superfood crucial for those people living in Northern climates who don't have access to natural sunlight.
Tanning beds are actually medical devices
Another alternative for those living in Northern climates or cloudy climates such as Seattle or Northern Oregon would be tanning beds. Tanning beds induce your skin to produce vitamin D. Obviously, it's not the same as natural sunlight, because it's a limited spectrum of light, but it is a way to produce vitamin D. |

What about cod liver oil or salmon oil? What if we all paid tax in salmon? That would be great because then Washington would have to figure out what to do with all this salmon or all of this cod liver oil. What if we paid tax with vitamins and minerals and nutrition? What would happen then? Wow. We'd have this whole country with a surplus of healing nutrients and Washington would have no choice but to hand them out to everyone, free of charge.
But wait a minute! How would our government get anything done if it ran on flax instead of dollars? Are you kidding me? |

Younger women who regularly eat red meat appear to face an increased risk for a common form of breast cancer, according to a large, well-known Harvard study of women's health published in the Archives of Internal Medicine November 2006. The study of more than 90,000 women found that the more red meat the women consumed in their twenties, thirties, and forties, the greater their risk for developing breast cancer fueled by hormones in the next twelve years. |

Why Not cod liver oil?
Although some people report that their rheumatism is relieved by cod liver oil, such oil is not a substitute for omega-3 fish oil in treating disease. As the name implies, cod liver oil comes from the liver of the fish, and it does not actually contain high levels of beneficial omega-3 s. The high omega-3 oil put in capsules comes from the whole body of the fish, such as mackerel, menhaden, and halibut, and is processed to have specific amounts of EPA and DHA fatty acids. Also, too much cod liver oil can be dangerous. |

One tablespoon of vitamin D— fortified cod liver oil supplies 1,400 IU of vitamin D but also contains high levels of vitamin A,
Current Dietary
Recommendations for Vitamin D
Adequate Tolerable Age Intake Upper Limits
0-50 200 IU/day 2,000 IU/day
51-70 400-800 IU/day 2,000 IU/day
Over 70 800 or more IU/day 2,000 IU/day
Higher doses than those listed as adequate or even upper limits will be needed by women who have had their vitamin D levels tested and found to be low or low normal. Dosage for these women should be monitored with follow-up tests. |
| Children born to mothers who had taken
10 ml per day of cod liver oil during their pregnancy and lactation had higher IQs at age four compared to those born to mothers who had taken corn oil or placebo.92
Maternal levels of omega-3 fatty acids, especially DHA, decrease during pregnancy.93 EFAs are components of breast milk, and maternal levels may be reduced further in nursing women. For the fetus, a deficiency of EFAs, particularly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and DHA, may lead to a poorly developed central nervous system. |
| In another study, infants born of mothers who had been given cod liver oil had higher levels of DHA in their umbilical cord, longer gestational length (longer to develop in the uterus), and more mature brain functioning measurements on the second day of life.99 Fish oil also appeared to be related to a reduction in the risk of preterm delivery in those women who had had a previous preterm delivery. There was no effect of fish oil on intrauterine growth restriction or pregnancy-induced hypertension. |
| During pregnancy, cod liver oil may be a questionable choice due to the high content of vitamin A, a teratogen, in fish liver.28)
Nutritional Supplements
Vitamin E. Some simple vitamin and mineral supplementation may be key to fertility in selected women, and because oxidative stress affects the female reproductive system and consequently fertility, antioxidants are important considerations in enhancing fertility. Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant, combating free radical damage, and can play a beneficial role in female fertility. |

Of course, there are some nutrients that you can't get that way, like cod liver oil and salmon oil, but there are companies out there that really care about the quality of their oils and aren't going to give you garbage. In terms of cod liver oils, one of my top recommendations is Nordic Naturals. They will give you a quality product without a bunch of harmful fillers. |

Vitamin C and Vitamin B6 are the two vitamins that have the most easily demonstrated effects on asthma, and we will cover these in greater detail below.
For the other vitamins we suggest taking a complete supplement (see pages 115-6).
VITAMIN C
Vitamin C has been recognised as a powerful and useful part of the diet for hundreds of years, since it was first associated with preventing scurvy in sailors. |
| It doesn't quite cover everything an asthmatic requires, though, so we recommend that in addition you should take extra Vitamin A and Vitamin D, preferably in the natural and concentrated form of a cod liver oil capsule, along with 2000-2500 mg of Vitamin C using ascorbate acid or rosehip juice (see advice above on building up the dose slowly).
Vitamin E in the form of a spoonful of wheatgerm daily is also good for asthmatics and if Vitamin P (bioflavonoids) improves your asthma you should add it to your daily supplement.
The quantities recommended for supplementation are for adults only. |
